General Motors believes that an all-electric car is going to be the future transportation mode and is interested in finding an affordable solution acceptable to wider customer segments. The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a new crossover which is still in the concept stage, but will join in due course the group of 2016 Volt and Spark EV both of which are already running up and down in public highways. The company’s ambition to provide a long-range affordable all-electric vehicle is almost successful with the new vehicle starting roughly at a price of $30,000 with 200 miles per charge to its credit. This concept was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show which took place during January 2015. The product will be unveiled at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show scheduled to take place in January 2016.
The Chevrolet has taken special care to reduce the curb weight of the incoming car by using materials like carbon fiber, Aluminum and Magnesium. Features like vented rear fenders are provided to contribute additional miles per Volt. The five doors with tall proportions are very useful for the people travelling and things being carried. The rear window wraps into the flanks combining with the large frosted glass roof and provides ample view of the outside world. Headlights and tail lamps contain LED bulbs of high intensity.
Like other concept vehicles, the interior of Bolt is futuristic in design and technology adaptation. Chevy provides facility to the buyers to control several aspects like vehicle location, self-parking and a touch screen of 10 inches in size that displays mobile info via Bolt EV connect which an app is specially made for the purpose. The electric driver train used in the Bolt helps in providing additional headroom. Simply we can say that the lack of transmission gives additional space for the legs. Without any overhang either in the front or in the rear, most of the interior space creates enough expansive space for the four.
No details about the drivetrain other than that it has a 200 miles per charge capacity is available till now. Probably it will be a tweaked electric motor from the GM with about 150 HP, 300 lb-ft of torque with a new battery attached to it. A few tidbits shared in the press release issued by Chevrolet are furnished below. Drivers can select the operating modes suitable to their driving needs like daily range of commuting combined with weekend cruising. The selected modes adjust vehicle ride height, accelerator pedal mapping, suspension tuning etc for uncompromising electric driving. This 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV concept also supports fast DC charging. Quick charging is an unavoidable necessity for an electric car.
Considering the equipment and features provided. There is nothing wrong in considering the 2017 Chevy Bolt EV to cost $30,000 for its base model. But the extended EV which can fulfill the need of customers for additional miles than the current 200 miles is yet to be conceived and constructed. The changes that are going to take place in the EV market are yet to be seen.
