Fiat 124 spider was introduced in the year 1966. The model continued till 1982, when Mazda announced that it was developing an all-new Mazda co-developing the chassis of the roadster with Fiat. The newly developed chassis was used to underpin a new Fiat vehicle. The new vehicle was unveiled at the Auto Show 2015 which took place in Los Angeles. Although underpinned for new 2017 Mazda, Fiat 124 has got its own exterior styling without even sharing a single panel of the Japanese sibling. The new Fiat 124 is 5.5 inches longer than the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The 1.4 liter turbo engine under the hood making 160 HP at 184 pound-feet of torque whereas Miata’s engine makes 155 HP at 148 pound-feet.
The body crafted by Fiat was entirely different contrary to the expectations that the shape and size of MX-5 will be retained by Fiat to reduce the developmental costs. The hexagonal grille in the front which is a signature characteristic of Fiat cars is retained without any change. The turn signals below the headlamps are also unaltered and reminds about the nostalgic past. Fog lamps and lower grille found in the incoming vehicle are welcome differences appreciated by the fans of fiat 124.The spider 124 is 5.5 inch longer, 0.1 inch lower and 0.2 inch wider than the MX-5, the Japanese counterpart.
2017 Fiat 124 interior
Though the exterior of the new 2017 Fiat 124 is radically different from its sibling MX-5, there is not much difference in the interior. Everything from center console, dash board, steering wheel, seats to infotainment system are similar and certain distinct features of the spider 124 stands out. The dashboard has an extra layer of leather on its lower side. The steel wheel has the same three spoke design. A composite infotainment system provided in the incoming vehicle includes facilities like MP3 player, HD radio, USB ports, AM/FM radio, multimedia control, six speakers, rear camera, blue tooth connectivity, 3 D navigation and voice recognition that allows the driver to use their mobile phones navigation and music systems hands free.
2017 Fiat 124 engine specs
The power train under the hood of Fiat 124 is completely different. There lies a 1.4 liter four-cylinder engine with turbo charging similar to that in Fiat 500 Abarth. It packs 160 HP at 184 lb-ft of torque. This is almost 5 HP and 36 lb-ft more than that of MX-5. Six-speed automatic and six-speed manual are the two choices available for buyers. Unfortunately the manual transmission is not as crisp as in the MX-5. For higher trim levels, one has to depend upon the automatic transmission. Curb weight of the spider 124 with manual transmission is 2436 pounds which is 104 pounds heavier than what Mada claims for an equivalent Miata.
